Indigenous Responses to Protestant Missionaries: Educational Competition and Economic Development in Ottoman Turkey

Abstract In recent years, a growing literature has claimed that there is strong and consistent association between the presence of historic missionary societies outside Europe positive long-term socio-economic outcomes. Yet, most these studies fail to specify whether this finding result investment in human capital or local actors stepping up their educational efforts reaction activities. This article uses example Protestant activity Ottoman Turkey separate two mechanisms. The state Armenian population responded incursions by modernizing expanding efforts. However, after foundation Republic modern Turkey, schools were closed was dramatically reduced. Using blockage direct effects, study confirms role indirect effects emulation played Turkey. Results show places with historically heightened competition native institutions are more likely have higher income, as measured night-time light density.
